More than half of vulnerable Australians are being forced to skip meals as households struggle to afford essentials amid the cost of living crisis, new research has suggested. One in four people have eaten expired or soiled food, while about five per cent have eaten from rubbish bins, according to the survey by the Salvation Army. The figures are extrapolated from a survey of 1,500 people who approached the charity for help.
“Some weeks I have not paid my rent, so I can provide for my kids and medical scans they have needed. “It causes so much stress living on the edge.” Salvation Army Major Brendan Nottle said the results were frightening. “In a lucky country like Australia, individuals and families shouldn’t have to make these sorts of decisions, like choosing whether to eat, pay rent or send your kids to the doctor,” he said.
