A staggering increase in lithium-ion battery blazes in SA has prompted a fresh warning from firefighters. The SA Metropolitan Fire Service said the batteries are dangerously unpredictable and should never be left charging overnight unattended.

Major spike in battery-related fires prompts warning. There’s been a 650 per cent increase in fire callouts involving dangerous batteries in the past five years — from four to 30 — and it’s expected to get even worse, the SA Government said on Wednesday. Of the 13 callouts so far in 2024, the most common causes are mobility devices, portable batteries, and tools. The threat can’t be extinguished altogether, but MFS deputy chief officer Jeff Swann says there are precautions you can take.
