Almost 31,000 Adelaide motorists were caught over one month for handling their mobile phone while driving, South Australia Police report. Three drivers were caught a “staggering” 19 times each during a one-month trial period that started in June for mobile phone detection cameras in five locations across Adelaide. Two drivers were detected 18 times, and four motorists were caught on 15 separate occasions. One driver was captured on camera with a cat sitting on his lap and a phone in his hand.

Police will only issue warning notices to people caught using their phone until the trial ends on September 19. Drivers will be fined $658 and issued three demerit points when the grace period is over. South Australia Police said the three drivers caught the most number of times during the trial would have been fined $12,500 each.
