Even though housing is a basic human right, social housing has not been a wildly popular investment for federal governments

. It’s expensive and serves a smaller segment of voters, at least compared with bridges and transit. But at a time when it is obvious our overall public health depends on people having decent housing, that could change. It may be that owners of some of the hotels used to house homeless people won’t want to wait for tourism to recover and instead might look to sell. If so, the provincial and federal governments should be ready with cheques in hand.

We have a weekly Western Canada newsletter written by our B.C. and Alberta bureau chiefs, providing a comprehensive package of the news you need to know about the region and its place in the issues facing Canada.

A bit of hope is the availability of vacant buildings for housing ... At least it is something ...

PM will put all illegal refugees in hotel rooms but homeless will be kept in the streets. PM is not to be trusted. He says what you want to hear but will do differently. The media needs to wake up. SNC scam, ethical violations? Media does not ask why?

Why can't the govt build budget houses for the homeless? Canada is considered one of the strongest economies in the world.. I am living in kerala, a state in india.. our govt is supporting people build their own house by giving them financial aid.. Canada has land and wealth.

Reality is more will join them. CBC are toast that's certainly coming so expect competition in private sector media job market.

How much support is enough? Blaming others but themselves for their own misfortune, great!

let's find them somewhere safe to camp and be policed..they did not handle the school situation well!!

There’s no such thing as “the homeless”. There are homeless people who are in that position for many reasons. Addiction, bad luck, mental illness as well as some people just want to be homeless. There are many reasons and each reason needs addressing. Canada fails on all counts

First step would be for the media and general public to stop labelling Vancouver’s addicted, mentally ill, homeless, and criminal as simply “the homeless”. As soon as we recognize and treat the underlying issues, only then can we address homelessness in Vancouver.

I’m hoping that now we know better, we will do better. This epidemic has highlighted inadequacies in all systems.

Canada doesn’t have a homeless problem It has an exploitation problem The country has plenty of housing and the financial aid available to get those in need into it.

Let’s not let the drug dealers exploit this vulnerable group either.

We have to... We have more immigration coming. Liberal logic

1/3 rd of the country might well be homeless after this CV19 hysteria ends. Perhaps writer should google 'global economic depression'. These homeless might well be our new neighbors😱😨
