Calls are mounting for the SARB to do more as economy suffers the effects of Covid-19. Picture: MARTIN RHODES
“The question for us in SA today is whether the SARB should be the lender of last resort for the government as well, so that the government will be the spender of last resort, to enable economic recovery. It is the independent decision of the SARB to decide how much money they supply and for what specific purpose in the context of price stability for economic growth.
“Furthermore, such money from the SARB must be used for immediate Covid-19 health-related interventions and for public infrastructure and industrial and agriculture financing as part of economic recovery measures,” the deputy minister said. ANC national working committee member Nomvula Mokonyane told the Sunday Times that the party still needs to deliberate on the government's decision to approach the International Monetary Fund for financial assistance — even in the case where the funds are only for Covid-19-related expenditure.
What can the reserve bank do when govt shuts down the economy.. everyone must get back to work.. if u cant work from home wea a mask & get back to work.. this economy is already in ICU dor crying out loud..
The Reserve Bank can only do so much to save the economy. The fact is that we need to have every sector opened up on a small scale with strict safety rules and slowly upscale each sector as/when it is safe to do so. We can't afford for any sector to fall flat!
