The new norm is ‘cepat beli, cepat balik’, (quick buy, quick exit).

Bayan Baru Market Traders Association chairman Tan Ken Keong said the new norm at the market is ‘cepat beli, cepat balik’, as crowding is not allowed.

“Usually at any market for that matter, market-goers would normally enjoy strolling leisurely to check, compare and even negotiate prices with traders and sellers. “And authorities also encourage them to travel less, so many come to the market only once or twice a week now. Barrier tapes are strung across the sides of the Bukit Gedung market in Bayan Lepas to limit the entrance and exit for better crowd control.“As for me, I hand-pack some of the items in plastic bags at a fixed price so that customers would not hang around to pick and crowd at my store front.“So, they are okay with just buying items in packs,” she said when met at the Bayan Baru market.
