Qantas CEO Alan Joyce announced on Thursday the airline will axe 6,000 staff on top of 15,000 employees who were already stood down amid the coronavirus crisis. In addition to 6,000 job cuts and 15,000 people stood down, Qantas will also ground up to 100 planes for 12 months. The airline’s shares have been placed in a trading halt as it plans to raise up to $1.9 billion in equity to strengthen the company’s financials and accelerate recovery.
"If the government is talking about ongoing assistance packages of other kinds, that perhaps might come in coming months, then I think we have to look at the conditions that is attached to those," he said. "I think we need to have an open and active public ownership of Qantas international, I don't want us to become an island country without a fully functioning airline.
Nationalises everything say the greens, think that’s also communism.....🤫🤫🤫🤮🤮🤮
You wouldn't own a airline company any where in the World they are all going bankrupt.
Why don’t we end this nanny state and create air bridges with relevant countries as the UK is doing next week . We can still test people on arrival . People can also be tested before departure. We have to live with this virus . We know who is vulnerable. Stop destroying lives .
Who cares what the Greens are calling for ?
So many foolish anti-communist nitwits on this feed. Happy to flush taxpayers money down the toilet propping up Qantas only for some cashed up hedge Fund to swoop and clean up down the track. But capitalism!!
They have raised a very valid point. Any taxpayer bailouts for big corporations should come with a share swap deal. That way the taxpayer gets a return.
But dear Greens, that's a lot of carbon emissions
The Greens proposing the Norrh Korea model
Is anybody surprised? The Greens want everything nationalised so we can get used to living in caves and trees like our ancestors. It solves climate change.
Qantas should simply not get any hand outs - How that flog Alan Joyce is on 24m is beyond a joke.
NO Greens we don't want to own some failing airline
So, pretty much all green & Labor supporters are government owned
Very rarely do I agree with nationalising or the Greens for that matter. But in my opinion going back to some industries being nationalised makes sense in these times. A airline especially domestic and the power industry are 2 examples.
And yet plenty of Australians have their partners/spouses/kids overseas who we can’t get to, as apparently couples and families aren’t important? Maybe the people who need to fly for non tourism reasons could help Qantas somewhat LoveIsNotTourism LoveIsEssential
Top of the pops this will air on your centralised socialist truth factories tonight. Waleed from theprojecttv is already mixing it with the homogenised faux pax it deserves. Here's your evening meal plan to go with it comrades, enjoy!
Funny how all communist scum seem to think nationalisation is the key to everything
The Greens... nationalise everything, tax everything, control everyone, redistribute wealth according to how they see fit... The USSR tried this in 1917
I am always puzzled why the Left believes governments can run enterprises more effectively than commercial entities. And in the same vein of puzzlement, why does the Right, e.g.the National party, support rent seeking commercial enterprises.
They should do a Hong Kong and buy up shares
The tail is already red. A hammer and sickle overlay would be easy. Approved.
I switch channel whenever a green comes on, just fyi.
How is that going to help.
