Pre-existing discrimination in the workforce including the gender-wage gap, gender inequality and age discrimination is going to be “heightened” by the coronavirus pandemic, according to Resolution123 Employment Law Export Carly Stebbing. Ms Stebbing told Sky News women in the workforce were particularly impacted by the virus as nation-wide shutdowns ravaged the tourism, hospitality and retail sectors which employed a large proportion of women.

She said the job market was “going to be an even tougher market” as more people were looking for employment as a result of large-scale job cuts in a number of industries such as aviation. The government has announced a scheme to subsidise TAFE courses for people looking to retrain or change fields in a bid to boost workers’ chance of employment in sectors that would benefit the economy coming out of the pandemic.
