Independent economist Saul Eslake says the strength of the economy when entering the pandemic is not a predictor of how Tasmania will emerge from it. "That unfortunately doesn't necessarily mean that we're going to come out of it faster than the rest of Australia," he said. Mr Eslake said part of riding out the pandemic will be keeping control of the virus, something the State Government has "managed to do very effectively since the unfortunate outbreak on the north-west coast".
"[Population growth] had picked up strongly in the two to three years leading up to the onset of the pandemic, as the flow of people moving across Bass Strait turned around, and as Tasmania attracted a larger share of overseas immigration," he said.
