Forecasters say the economy might not bounce back to its pre-coronavirus size until 2024.

There had been a V-shaped"bounceback", he said, referring toHowever, other economists have expressed doubts about the potential for such a swift recovery in activity.

"Even though lockdown restrictions are easing, consumer caution has been much more pronounced than expected," said Howard Archer, chief economic adviser to the EY Item Club. "We believe that consumer confidence is one of three key factors likely to weigh on the UK economy over the rest of the year, alongside the impact of rising unemployment and low levels of business investment.

"The UK economy may be past its low point but it is looking increasingly likely that the climb back is going to be a lot longer than expected."

Ironic that UK economy has tanked to the extent it has because BorisJohnson Govt could have minimised the damage. With lockdown holding the vulnerable/shielded in protection, the under 60's could have unlocked say 1st May to fully restart the schools & economy. Keir_Starmer

More like forty years. Too many people still not going to work. Just goes to show that a lot of people have usless jobs

Could being the key word when are you going to start to report on facts and not fear and bullshit you keep digging your grave deeper and deeper you will be finished soon.

WE ALL SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WITH BORIS IN CHARGE IT WAS GOING TO BE BOOM OR BUST, WE ARE GOING BUST, WORST TO COME!!

The most important thing as now, for any responsible Gov't, is to protect its citizens from COVID-19. It doesn't matter how long the economy takes to recover. Human life comes first.

Well, that’s all right then, not so bad after all. Good job we’ve not had a decade of austerity grinding down the economy beforehand ...

More like 40yrs

Still recovering from the financial crash. I think it will be a lot longer than 4 years.

Here you go again 'could' is not news.

Naaaa will take at least 6-8 years or even longer.

Massively longer than 4 years.

so be it.

......and then a further 50 years to recover from Brexit

Four-ty years you mean

And in the next breath you will be predicting a second wave the bbc and their forecasters

are they the same forecasters that are always wrong about the climate but the BBC lead that campaign happy making millions of children terrified having nightmares about the climate based on bogus forecasters that are always wildly inaccurate.

Somewhat optimistic. At least it will give Brexiteers an excuse.

It won't

All my Amazon purchases should go some way to assist 🤣

The normal economic cycle is 7 years (ie 3.5 years to go down and 3.5 to go back up). Nothing to see here, move on...

OK - four years assuming there’s no second or Mexican wave - but hey it hides anything that Project Fear said about Brexit

What do you expect when you locked down the country for months on end then force people to wear masks everywhere they go. Obviously the economy will crash and we know this winter you lot will push out the same propoganda again to force another lockdown

BBCScotlandNews And what about global economy? Surely, the world should be seen as one household, we're all interdependent. This egotistical route will get us nowhere and with the increase in tech and division etc lead to worldwide devastation. How long can the balance be kept? Who cares?

And the Lockdown was totally unnecessary.

It will be another lost decade because of Tory rule. First 'austerity', then Covid-19 and then Brexit. Well done us.

Now how did it come to this conclusion? 🤔🤦🏽‍♀️

All of this seems to be scar mongering. We been down that road before and managed. Don't know why certain people like the government go on and on about the same old story. xmas, everyone will be jumping the gun. What more depressing, hearing the same story 24-7. Let the world end

Better than waiting for the dead to rise...

Wouldn't have happened if the government done a better job as we coped with this now repeated borring news before all these stricken terms and conditions, having the lockdown was the main cause, and said before they have caused all this by doing things wrong and scar mongering

COULD COULD COULD COULD, THE BIAS BROADCAST CORPORATION NEEDS DEFUNDING AND NEEDS TO BE A SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE NO ONE WILL PAY FOR ... DefundBBC

Every one is in the same position. This is a devastating event, the likes of which most of us have not seen before. Keeping people safe is worth a debt that gets repaid over time. How could we do otherwise?

And then do you start The Reese Mogg 50 year recovery?

All for a virus that is less deadly than the flu in 2000. Good job Boris!

'Don't worry it'll be just like Xmas, just a bit longer, that's all' Xmas doesn't usually last 4 years...

Go after the tax dodgers and we'll fix it a lot quicker.

The BBC we had to get used blistering hot summers that would become the norm ☂️☂️💦💦 think they will have to start listening to the other side

Don't worry. The government will keep increasing public debt to inflate house prices. Then, when they're out of power, it'll be the job of the next government to raise taxes and become unpopular for the gaping hole dug out by this government.

Reparations from China?

Austerity looks like it will never end in the UK.

10 years if we were still under eu rule.

And? That’s still 6 years less than it took to recover from Labours debacle under Brown. But then why let the truth spoil a good paparazzi anti government propaganda rhetoric?

Every country’s economy is in the same position- these headlines make it sound like it’s just the UK - so depressing

Rubbish .

Be grateful that it's just your economy. The damage that Trump has done to the U.S. will take a decade to repair (if then)!

BBCScotlandNews Ach you‘ve left the EU...you‘ll be flourishing in no time...all these opportunties 💪

Optimism?

is this before or after we finally recover from the 2008 crash?

Getting the Tory excuses in early...

**Slow clap** Well done BBC for this. Great wee gift to Boris to help with the whole 'it's not Brexit, its covid that destroyed us' coming to TV screens in 6 months.

go go brexit 😂😂😂😂

BBCScotlandNews “Scottish economy would never recover after independence”.

what to, a state of austerity. the bar was set low.

It will NEVER recover as long as you force people to move around like criminals. Stop it!

So!

“Could”

All in step with nwo plans then.

🤔Absolute nonsense, the UK economy will be booming by December 2020.

I see a few Brexit comments on here. There is a school of thought that if we leave now under WTO rules it will enable COVID-19 to mask the effects. I don’t have an issue with leaving but it is no time to leave without a deal.

Be e even longer if we had stayed in the eu with their bail out bill

Why do we still trying to fix a broken system? It's time to move on FFS. The whole wages and slavery , 9 to 5 etc. C'mon....

BBCScotlandNews And the extra Tory inflicted deaths? Easter?

...but then there's BREXIT!

...and the rest, with BoJo the Clown in charge!

I think it may take longer than 4 years to recover!

U.B.I.

Many people will never go back to their consumerist pre-covid habits. The war generation were frugal for the rest of their lives. This is what terrifies neoliberal governments! Today's youth will have a far more sustainable approach to purchasing.

'Could'

It will take longer now the government as said everyone must wear a mask. I will only be going out to shop when absolute necessary. My friends and family agree and I bet most of the population think the same

Four years seem a very optimistic scenario if we factor in COVID-19 and Brexit. Let me revisit this article in 2024, then. Fingers crossed.

But not the Chinese, S Korean, German or any other country that followed well known infectious disease procedures. Nor the US despite its infection rate

A extract from our executive team at Debenhams '....we urge you all to ignore the distraction of media speculation and keep focusing on the superb job you have all been doing to get us this far....' In other words ignore the BS from the scummedia !

Blame the Chinese

Hope they don’t develop an unlicensed, untested vaccines like those given to Gulf War troops in 1990/91 🇬🇧💉💉💉💉💉💉💉💉💉💉🇬🇧👇

More when you have Murdoch as prime minister of Australia/US/UK.

That is ridiculous, it will take far longer than four years.

We've done it before and we'll do it again.

It will take longer at the way that the UK government is currently behaving.

With Brexit in top of that it will be longer than 4 years.

Shame its only got 4 months before WTO free fall then

Was this also taking Brexit into account?

Well duh maybe longer
