WASHINGTON: US employment is projected to increase by 6 million jobs this decade, with the annual growth rate sharply slower than during the economy's recovery from the Great Recession, according to a government report on Tuesday .
"The 2019-29 projections were finalised in the spring of 2020 when there was still significant uncertainty about the duration and impacts of the pandemic," the BLS said. The healthcare and social assistance industry is projected to add the most new jobs, and six of the 10 fastest-growing occupations are related to healthcare, the BLS said. The long-term projections are intended to capture structural changes in the economy, not cyclical fluctuations. The projected pedestrian employment growth pace reinforces economists' belief that it could take years for the labor market to recoup the jobs lost during the pandemic.
