Government benefits don't seem to be stopping people from going back to work.

OTTAWA — The pace of gains in Canada’s job market slowed in August, as Statistics Canada reported the economy added 246,000 jobs, and other data that experts say suggests billions in government benefits isn’t stopping people from getting back into the workforce.

As well, the number of Canadians working less than half their usual hours — likely due to COVID-19 — fell by 14.6 per cent. That leaves some 713,000 people still working fewer hours, down from a peak of 2.5 million in April. The latest figures for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit showing almost $72.6 billion in benefits paid out since its inception shortly after COVID-19 forced economic lockdowns in March, through to the end of August.

It does appear as of August that even with these income benefits in place, that hard-working Canadians did actually want to return to the workforce. The Liberals want to replace the CERB with a $22-billion package of three new benefits that would allow workers to keep some payments while earning more.

The unemployment rate fell to 10.2 per cent in August compared with 10.9 per cent in July. Statistics Canada said the unemployment rate in August would have been 13 per cent had it included in calculations people who wanted a job, but didn’t look for work.Mikal Skuterud, a labour economist from the University of Waterloo, noted the number of people who had jobs in March and are looking for work now has skyrocketed over the summer, making the search activity rate comparable to other recessions.

1.1MILLION PEOPLE ARE NOT WORKING who previously had jobs and their 700,100 friends who HAD full time jobs are picking up PT shifts to top up CERB Employers are DESPERATE. Whoever wrote this would know that if they asked them instead looking at stats

People returning to work isn't exactly added. If someone robs you of $100 and give you $20 back you haven't gained $20.

And, just FYI “returned to” is not the same as “added” 😡🇨🇦

Anecdotal evidence would suggest the opposite. Waitress at local restaurant now getting full time hours (😁) due to other staff not coming back (Wpg) restaurant in S W MB closing two days a week so (under) staffed people can get some time off. Just my experiences. JustinTrudeau
