the country. The major cause of poverty is unemployment. Youth unemployment rate in Nigeria is said to have increased to 53.40 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2020 from the 40.80 per cent in the second quarter of the year, which means it is increasing with each passing day.

Unfortunately, as a youth population grows, so does, the unemployment rate. Massive expenditure by the federal government is certainly required to turn the tide. On May 29, 2015, General Muhammadu Buhari was sworn-in amidst high expectations. Part of that expectation is the need to urgently tackle several challenges that have hindered economic prosperity, sustainable security and overall national development in Nigeria. These challenges also include but are not limited to terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, violent conflicts, ethnic tensions widespread poverty, youth unemployment, shortage of electricity, water scarcity and corruption.

Nigerian is endowed with enormous natural and human resources sufficient to place her among the top 20 developed countries of the world. It is Africa’s largest producer of oil and sixth largest oil producing country in the world. With the population of about 210 million people, Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country and its largest economy.

Unfortunately, despite its huge resource endowment, majority of its population wallow in abject poverty while unemployment and insecurity continue to grow. Its economic misfortune has been dwindling due to fall in the global price of crude oil, corruption and poor economic management. Unfortunately, these have now been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.The challenges facing President Buhari are as huge and diverse as the country itself.
