Treasurer Tim Pallas is going it alone on the gig economy.The report found some workers were earning less than the minimum wage – with unprecedented levels of monitoring and control by their “employers” – and often had little idea of their industrial rights or even their hourly rate of pay.was that a state, or even a group of jurisdictions, could achieve only limited objectives and that changes to Commonwealth policy was needed.
“With a leadership vacuum in Canberra, Victoria will lead the way with more focused support for the on-demand workers and businesses who need it.”said the government was closely monitoring developments in the gig economy but that states could do more for on-demand workers by using workplace safety powers to improve delivery rider safety.
“The government believes more can be done by state and territory governments through education, compliance and enforcement of work health and safety laws,” the spokesman said. “The government is also taking an important leadership role on the issue, including by raising rider safety at the next meeting of work health and safety ministers to improve safety outcomes in the gig economy.”
