How the founder of a biomanufacturing startup raised $13 million backed by Emma Watson and Twitter cofounder Biz Stone

It's not every day that a startup attracts Series A investment from high-profile backers like Twitter cofounder Biz Stone or actress Emma Watson, but one startup has closed a $12.5 million round with cash from both.

CEO and co-founder Grant Aarons also described the DNA as a circuit board or scaffold, which can scale up the chemical process and drive down industry costs. Aarons described being urged to"at least" ask to be put in contact with"non-white, non-male investors". Diversity would give the company a different perspective on hiring and on culture, he said.

Other investors who ended up on the roster include former Twitter engineering director Vijay Pandurangan, and VC and IndieBio founder Arvind Gupta.
