KUALA LUMPUR: As low wages may push more people towards the gig economy, the Human Resources Ministry is looking to revise minimum wages to ensure better take up of job opportunities prepared by the government.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said despite rolling out initiatives which cost billions of ringgit to create job opportunities - it was also a challenge for the ministry to convince employers to offer decent salaries to potential employees.

On that note, Saravanan said the government was studying the possibility of increasing minimum wages which currently stood at RM1,200, to attract potential employees who otherwise may lean towards gig economy jobs or those that required them to work from home. The government had allocated RM4.8billion to create 600,000 job opportunities under the JaminKerja initiative, which was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Saturday .

MyStep was a program under Laksana where short-term jobs under contract are offered at government linked companies.

Ministers of HR Malaysia past and present tend to be pro employers and kept accusing locals don't want the 3 D jobs, whereas , it is the unliveable wages associated with 3 D jobs that have kept them away.

Political will nil

Don't need to preach economics DatukSaravanan Your job as a Minister ( in case you forgotten) is to solve the issue , not a preacher.
