Stats SA says COVID-19 and the economic depression is expected to lead a drop in South Africa's fertility rate.

This follows a report released last week by the agency on population estimates as well as fertility, mortality, and migration indicators.According to Diego Iturralde, chief director responsible for demographic and population statistics, the pandemic has profoundly affected the dynamics of the country's population.

"The COVID pandemic has had a profound impact on the population dynamics of South Africa, we have seen that for the year 2021 that the number of deaths shot up to a level last previously seen in 2006 when we were in the midst of the HIV/AIDS epidemic," he said. "The good news is that the recovery from COVID-19 is beginning and we have noted for the 2021/22 that the number of deaths has begun to decline but it’s still far away from what we would have seen before the COVID-19 began.”
