Canberra's light rail network will become wireless through the Parliamentary Triangle, following a joint investment from the federal and ACT governments.

Canberra's light rail network will become wireless through the Parliamentary Triangle as construction continues into the city's south, following a joint investment from the federal and ACT governments.Five new vehicles will be added to the network, allowing the light rail to become wireless through the Parliamentary Triangle

In a statement, the ACT government said this would enable the vehicles to operate wirelessly along the route's extension throughout the parliamentary zone, stage 2A to Commonwealth Park and stage 2B towards Woden respectively. "This will be followed by the submission of an environmental assessment and works approval application for the stage 2A project, so construction of the light rail line can commence soon after raising London Circuit is complete," the statement said.

"We need to order new LRVs now, and upgrade our existing fleet and depot, to ensure we have enough vehicles manufactured, delivered, tested and ready to start services to Commonwealth Park when construction of the track is completed," Mr Steel said.

I'm proud to see the expansion of Canberra light rail. Only 30 years after I put in into the Labor party policy platform.

NikiBurnside Transport_CBR ABarrMLA CatherineKingMP In Melbourne no one is objecting trams running on overhead wires directly in front of Victoria Parliament House

Never seen a dollar they didn't want to spend

Sacrosanct? Seriously? Over engineering at it's finest. Just put the wires up.

'They will then run on battery power that they've charged from those overhead wires earlier, when they are running through that sacrosanct downtown precinct through the Parliamentary Triangle ' Believe it or not, an actual word for word quote.

hope its not a copy of the silly sydney light rail

NikiBurnside Transport_CBR ABarrMLA CatherineKingMP Heavy batteries are deadweight to be avoided. At the end of their lives, they will have to be disposed of. The banning of wires in the Parliamentary zone is a costly own goal. Where will the LR vehicles be manufactured?

ACT is big on ideas like wireless Metro but they have never been able to fix the scandals at Canb hospital

So Good and refreshing to have Labor Govts in Australia. We see tangible returns directly from our taxes paid.
