The prime minister, Fumio Kishida, has come under pressure from businesses to loosen restrictions to help the world’s third-biggest economy recover from the pandemic, the Kyodo news agency said.

The chief cabinet secretary, Hirokazu Matsuno, said this week the government was looking to ease Covid-19 restrictions while “maintaining a balance between preventing the spread of infection and promoting social and economic activities”. Japan last week raised its daily ceiling on inbound travellers from 20,000 to 50,000, and travellers who have been vaccinated at least three times are no longer required to take a Covid-19 test within 72 hours of departure.
