Recurrent's strategy was not unlike other bargain shoppers in digital media, like BDG Media, which has gobbled up once-prominent publishers like Gawker and Mashable on the cheap. If you can get a good deal on niche or down-and-out publications, infuse them with better resources, and pool them together, the sum would be greater than the parts.

"We acquired at a fast pace to establish a foothold and market-leading positions in each of our key verticals," a Recurrent spokesperson said.
"I think that eliminates a layer and brings sales and editorial closer together, which I find is always critical in driving go-to-market success," said Vargas, who previously worked as the chief operating officer of Bleacher Report and as an executive at Turner Broadcasting."Audience and revenue diversification continues to be at the heart of the Recurrent strategy," he said.
Sechrest said the company will now focus on its existing portfolio of media subject matters:"If we end up going into new verticals, it's going to be going in with significantly larger brands to start them out."After the MEL shutdown, Recurrent staffers were told that no further cuts were planned, but in September, the larger round of layoffs hit.
