Harpauer explained the government accesses a database through the Canada Revenue Agency when deciding who receives the cheques. Anyone who filed their 2021 taxes would receive the payment, she said, including some who have passed away. “It’s going to be that anomaly of a time period that the person filed, passed away, but the estate was not handling their income tax filing,” she said.

He said her estate has been closed, which means he can’t deposit it. Reine, who lives in Regina, was one of the executors of her estate.Janice Horvath, who lives in Saskatoon, said she received a cheque for her late husband, Charles. She hasn’t yet contacted the government about the incident but said she feels like it’s an “incredible waste of taxpayers’ money.”
