Court ruling requires J.D. Irving to fork over trove of data as part of the tax agency’s fight against underground economy.

Earlier this month, the Federal Court approved a request by the CRA to require J.D. Irving to fork over the trove of significant data dating back to Jan. 1, 2019, as part of the tax agency’s fight against the underground construction economy.Sign up to receive the daily top stories from the National Post, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

J.D. Irving will also have to send CRA a list containing known identification, contact, payment and banking information of all tradespeople, contractors and installers who perform building or installing services for Kent Building Supplies customers. Kidd’s affidavit also reveals the CRA has turned its attention towards potential tax fraud and evasion in the construction industry in Atlantic Canada specifically.

“The underground economy results in lost jobs and hinders economic growth. It erodes the integrity of Canada’s tax system and compromises the competitiveness of businesses, particularly small businesses,” CRA spokeswoman Hannah Wardell said in a statement. Lawyer David Piccolo, a partner at Tax Chambers, says this UPR likely has “multiple levels” of targets.

Piccolo also said the data obtained could also eventually lead the CRA to house-flippers who did not pay the requisite harmonized sales tax on renovations.

Lots of contractors are going to have added anxiety.

Short the pick-up truck and snow mobile manufacturers.

Time for these smaller contractors to charge for labor only and have the customer but the materials direct! Problem solved! 😉

Always after the little guys

If people conducted business honestly and paid tax, CRA wouldn't have to do what it does, go after people who evade taxation. It's that simple

just the way my mind works. I read the article and first thing I thought is now when people near the magic 20 grand they will say I do not have an account with you and pay cash ..

Why not do the charities and NGOs instead? I once painted the house of a guy who worked for the CRA. He said if they wanted to, they could nail anyone for tax evasion.

Sweet, that’ll generate more tax dollar for The Dauphin to give away in Cambodia!! And the government wonders why people avoid taxes when they can when they see Zippy dancing away with our wallets?

No funding to go after sophisticated white collar tax fraud. It is simply too complex 🥲 Might as well go for a bunch of little guys where the highest possible long-odds jackpot is *checks notes* ... $130k. Shame. The CRA has made it clear how much it hates poor Canadians.

And this is why you need to use cash

Two things the Canadian government is very good at: taxing people and helping them kill themselves.

To be expected from Trudeau’s tyrannical rule!! trudeaumustgo

Meanwhile no charges from the Panama or Paradise Papers. White collar crime is OK. Dirty blue collar workers are the problem! cdnpoli

Big Govt in bed with Big Business! There's a word for that. What could possibly go wrong?

Wow this is just the beginning, good for the big developers avoiding taxes whilst making billions Maybe audit the government instead. Starting with the PM. I hope they look into undeclared income for towing companies that were paid by the white nationalist convoy in Ottawa too.
