PUTRAJAYA: The government will introduce a new targeted subsidy mechanism soon, possibly by 2023, says Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli.

"After three Cabinet meetings, it is quite obvious that we have to expedite a proper roll out of an index-based targeted subsidy system," said Rafizi during a press conference at the Economic Planning Unit office in Putrajaya on Friday .

In June, the Finance Ministry said the government's projected subsidy expenditure was RM77.3bil, which is the highest amount in subsidies ever borne by the government.
