I'd never been let go before. It was very scary for me and my wife. Our youngest child still had a year of college left — we were worried about our income. I tried it out, though I had profiles on several other freelance platforms as well. I liked that I could search for marketing-automation gigs and refine clients based on their location and the kind of work they were looking for.
It took me three weeks to get my first Upwork client. They were in the mortgage industry. I'd had a client in that industry before when I was working full time, and I'd actually worked in it years ago. But though I started charging low, I had a rule that every time I completed a job, I would increase the rate for the next gig I got.
It means I'm up front with my customers about exactly how much time I'm spending on their project, and I charge them for exactly how much time I spend. That's good value for them.I ask clients a lot of questions to understand how they run their business and why they run their business that way. Even if they've already conducted their own research, I tell them to send it to me so I can review it. It takes time to do this work well.
