We must protect children from Fortnite and other manipulative games and apps

newsletter, a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation, and the executive director of McMaster University’s master of public policy in digital society program.maker Epic Games Inc. more than half a billion dollars for privacy violations and unwanted charges. Epic will pay a US$275-million penalty for violating children’s privacy law, change its default privacy settings and refund US$245-million for “tricking” users into making unintentional purchases.

We are in a unique moment as the country concurrently considers legislative interventions that can be complementary. The federal government is actively consulting on the future of competition policy while revisiting updates to federal private-sector privacy law and seeking to level the playing field between digital giants and content creators and news-media outlets.

Far too many mobile apps and games use manipulative tactics – often referred to as “dark patterns” – to keep kids online longer and extract data about them. Dark patterns don’t exist in a regulatory grey zone in Canada; in theory, we enforce against them through civil and criminal provisions in the Competition Act that seek to address deceptive advertising. But in practice, the successful application of these provisions is far less clear.

Nope, games are ok, just limit the time for homeworks.

Did anyone tell Tipper Gore?

I'd rather my kid play fortnite than have them go to some creepy drag queen show any time

OK so video games are bad but pedophile clowns in libraries are good...... Whatever you say government newspaper people.

But taking them to this is A-OK. 🙄

My goodness, let the kids have fun.

So it’s good to protect kids right? What about the manipulative influence from the Drag story time? Provocative male dancers, 3/4 naked in front of children. But y’all worried about video games.🤦🏻‍♀️

It's called parenting. Know your child set limits and don't give them free reign of screens.

Drag shows are more appropriate for that age.

It's the parents job to watch what the kid is playing. There are WAY better things you could be going after.

That’s parents’ job, an intrusive gov is the last thing Canadians need, although we are already a semi dictatorship.

My son plays fortnite and he's fine. Lol. Parents have to participate in their child's life. Games are not the problem, Parents are.

It's not an issue. If the parents don't want the kids to play, don't buy it or don't let the kids play it.

We should protect them from Jeffrey Marsh.

Not drag queen story time?

We need to protect our children from this bullshit 😤

Get them away from from those hateful games and into something wholesome like drag shows.

No one else's responsibility but the parent's.

we need to protect kids for fake news that promote grooming in the name of diversity

fakenews Chinese interference in elections, you liars! Focus on the story that matters not the story the ccp liberals told you to write.

as a HUGE gamer myself with children that play video games isn't that our job as a parent and not that of the gov't to protect our kids ?
