Cosma received more than $500 from an acquaintance to be used for a business investment and instead used the money for different purposes the prosecutor said.

A Guttenberg police officer has resigned and agreed to banishment from public employment after he was charged with stealing money from an acquaintance, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

Anthony Cosma, 32, was charged with one count of third-degree theft by deception Feb. 28. Cosma waived his right to an indictment Thursday and will be permitted to enter into the Pretrial Intervention program. He also forfeited his right to current and future public employment. An investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Internal Affairs Unit determined Cosma, who had been on the Guttenberg police force since 2018, received more than $500 from an acquaintance to be used for a business investment and instead used the money for different purposes.
