With 'Flamin' Hot' movie set to premiere at SXSW, its producer tackles claims about the central character's role in creating the spicy Cheetos flavor and reveals how Eva Longoria won the director job

raised doubt about the role of the film's protagonist, Richard Montañez, in creating the flavor. In the late 1970s, the son of Mexican-American immigrants living in California found himself working at a Frito-Lay plant in Rancho Cucamonga.

The story ignited a firestorm, and Frito-Lay later appeared to soften its original stance.

Eva's brilliant. She has a master's in Chicano studies. When she came in, she had the vision. We shared the vision, but she also had the specificity of what was wrong with the project and the script and what needed to be fixed to make it more authentic. I connected to Richard's story and it just so happened that the faith elements represented in the movie were consistent with the faith elements that he experienced in his life. It took moments of him relying on his faith to get him through situations he otherwise would not have probably been able to make it through. So, definitely, I connected to his entire story as well as those elements of faith.

I love superhero movies, but you can't go put on a suit and fly through your city and save the city. That's not going to work. But you can watch a movie like"Flamin' Hot" and say,"Well, I have ideas within me like Richard. I have tenacity like Richard. I have vision like Richard, and I can actually take the steps Richard did in the movie and apply them to my life and find more success.

One thing that's important to note is that the LA Times article and the information in it was not a surprise to us, because I had gone to Plano, Texas, to meet with PepsiCo years before the article came out.

It comes to me as no surprise (not the failure of the bank per se, but the fact that the startup economy has seen some bubble characteristics recently).
