The national government’s fiscal balance swung to a surplus in January 2023 as the growth in state collections outpaced spending during the period, Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno said Friday.

Citing data from the Bureau of the Treasury , Diokno said: “The national government ran a P45.7-billion budget surplus in January 2023, reversing the P23.4 billion deficit recorded a year ago.”

State revenues in the first month of 2023 grew by P70.092 billion from P278.075 billion in the same period last year. Tax collections from the Bureau of Internal Revenue stood at P234.819 billion, up 20% from P195.775 billion year-on-year.
