Barber Rosso Villamil cuts Justin Newhook's hair on Saturday at his Stratford, Ont., shop's grand opening. Villamil told his customer to pay what he wanted. Newhook ended up giving him meat and potatoes.
"I kind of thought he was joking, but I just kind of wanted to go with it," laughed Newhook in an interview on CBC Radio'sSo Newhook stopped off at the grocery store and picked up a bag of yellow potatoes and a Styrofoam tray of ground beef. It cost him about $18 — a steal for meat, he said.Like a lot of people, Newhook has noticed life has become expensive, especially groceries.
He's also considering offering haircuts for food donations for new Canadians and those in need in his community. "That's why we have to give and serve."People turn to bartering to save money A number of other customers have also been requesting haircuts by bartering. While the family-run business doesn't plan to accept food as payment in every case, they're willing to work with clients.
But, but the cons don't like or condone the barter system
The better the beef and potatoes, the better the hair cut
I wouldn't be publishing this the government will find a way to tax it!
Its 1982 again. Who remembers when the S. Ontario orchard farmers went bankrupt in the 80s? My family's biz was paid in apples in the winter of 82-83. But bank didn't take apples as mortgage payment. Currency. Is. What. Makes. Civilization. Possible.
Maybe that’s why Doug Ford got the haircut he did. Paid with the cheap meat
Pay them in meatballs, like in the movie, the Wedding Singer LOL
Pffft, Canadians already resorting to the barter system due to a collapsing economy, good times good times.
Am i the only one that sees this as ' not having to pay taxes on his income ' lol
Surprised he's not getting hauled to the gulag for tax evasion
There are more millionaires and billionaires than ever before yet many have to barter for services because they can't afford basic goods. We need to do better and hold our governments to higher standard of responsibility on inflation issues.
Honestly something heartwarming about this. If the world at-large continues to make decisions that provide no relief, no balancing the scales ? Barter, trade or whatever, people will find the means to obtain the things that 'all of a sudden' cost more 🙍
Welcome to the barter system 👍👍
The government is going to want some cut of that.
That may be the only way to survive if we have to live with a digital ID and currency.
Let's go back to the trade system (before money). How will the government tax us then?
Build back better isn’t better, is it?
Its a good thing, but now CRA will be auditing him for missed taxes.
Sadly, contra deals don’t pay the mortgage. When I owned a small newspaper, we’d get asked to do this all the time but the bank, the printer, and the post office? They wanted cash. 🤷🏼♀️
Oh yes, lets do everything this way and have zero public services. Survival of only the fittest. What's your point with this, CBC? People have been bartering for decades. This is not new.
The answer to CBDC. Local barter economies.
Based on the haircut shown in the photo, it doesn't seem worth more than a stale potato chip or two.
Because groceries have become worth more than most people can afford
Don't tell the govt. 🤫
June 2023: 'Barber shop goes bankrupt and closes due to too many customers paying with food rather than money. Turns out you can't pay the rent with food.'
That means the dollar is shit
Going back to this type of thing would be interesting.
Total avoidance of the oppressive taxes our federal and provincial governments have imposed upon us. You love to see it
We should be using food and other goods in a bartering system like it used to be. Money is fake. It is a debt system, and has kept us oppressed for as long as it has been the currency.
Revenue Canada probably can't stand this idea
In this thread: People bringing their own issues for other people to deal with.
Great idea
start of the underground economy
ask recent immigrants if this is the canada they thought they'd be moving to.
Always a sense of glee in cbc articles whenever they write about the downfall of society.
The haircut in the picture isn’t worth a sack of beans!
Canada is broken
Be Your Own Bank
He could instead increase his price per haircut. Inflation has affected everyone. He should be able to live with dignity.
Well, if you pay with a dozen eggs, then you also need to send an egg, or 13% of eggs, on top as HST. And the barber needs to send 3 or 4 eggs, or say 30% plus, to the government as income tax. Consider sending the eggs directly to JT when you see him.
“As with the end of feudalism 500 years ago, capitalism’s replacement by postcapitalism will be accelerated by external shocks and shaped by the emergence of a new kind of human being. And it has started.”
Only those who prepare will survive what is coming That will be very few who can get through it ok
Barter. Hmmm, I wonder how long the government will let that last?
Can't tax bartering!
Their accountant just quit.
He'll be filling his freezer with shoplifted goods
I've done contra deals before. I knew a single mom who needed a bed for her kid so I made one in exchange for her cleaning my place x times. (shut up you pervs, I mean cleaning as in sweeping, dusting etc lol)
Watch how fast the government will come down on the barber because how does the government get their share.
Build Back Barter Yup..that's where it's going
Love it!
The present political 'nudge' is designed to wake people up and begin... 1) homeschooling 2) home cooking 3) home gym 4) home values 5) bartering goods and services The losers are waiting for the guv'ment to fix shit. It ain't coming. That's not the goal. Life will be…
Barter system is the best way. Everyone chips in and there are no free loaders.
I just had new floors installed in the whole house and paid cash. I offered my honour as a barter but the floor guy only wanted cash.
How do the government especially corrupt liberals get paid tho?
Don’t forget your taxes are increasing April 1st ….
Barter systems make more and more sense with higher and higher taxes.
Thanks Trudeau 👍 we’ve evolved back to trade and barter system, within a year we’ll be trading farm stock
Brings up the question, will he be taxed by the gov?
Uh...people don't usually advertise that they are doing this. Thanks CBC!
Bartering may well be the currency of the future for many, as digital currencies are mandated and controlled by the state through social and carbon credits.
That’ll make the government scream. Hard to tax bartering.
Love it
It’s a sad day that we have to barter a service as everything is TOO EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!! Everything!!!!
There’s nothing wrong with the barter system but unfortunately, since this is a Trudeau government, the CRA will come collecting on those taxes
During the depression years, doctors and teachers were paid this way by their communities
Nothing wrong with the barter system! goodhairmatters
Wow tax avoidance lol. Is this advice!?
Mmhmm as I highly doubt hair stylists received any fat taxpayer funded bonuses like the Trudeau PR arm CBC did .
But how do you know how much of what to bring? If only there was a measurement system that, although flawed, has proved itself and controlled from inflating by a federal institution.
How'd the government going to get 45% of those meat and potatoes?
