The realisation of how people could often place their pets’ health above their own occurred to fund manager Fleur Wright with the arrival of two dachshunds into her household during the pandemic.
To Wright, a global equities portfolio manager with Northcape Capital, Zoetis makes perfect sense in its “rather esoteric” portfolio. “I think I’m more comfortable with financial modelling than actual modelling,” she says, after her photo shoot for this article.“Growing up on a farm, you also don’t have much exposure to those types of things so when you see people who work in the field enjoy themselves, it becomes rather obvious.”
Having worked in an environment obsessed with discounted cash flows in her first job as an analyst at Capital Partners during the technology boom of the late 1990s and early 2000s, where “every taxi driver was pitching you stocks”, it taught her to look past the cyclical elements and remain focused on the long term.“I’m looking longer term and through the cycle.
The fund manager says she “really enjoyed” her time working at UBS, a professional stint that enabled her to return to Australia and continue working for the investment bank. Surprised at the pairing, she remembers thinking she was surely going to embarrass herself in front of Orcel, before her husband gently nudged her out of imposter syndrome. He plainly told her: “don’t think for a second human resources hasn’t already sent him your profile, and he’s said, ‘yep happy to do that’.” It worked.“I do encourage people now to not be so dismissive of people that you think are out of reach,” she says.
