Finance Minister Katy Gallagher has announced $17.8 billion in savings that will contribute to the substantial cost-of-living package, which she claims will not add to inflationary pressures.

The substantial amount, which is in addition to $20 billion found in October, paves the way to fund a number of crucial measures which will be outlined when Treasurer Jim Chalmers speaks on Tuesday evening.

“Of that $17.8 billion, about $7.8 billion is through reprioritisation though the defence program, so through the strategic review,” she said. Sky News Australia revealed last week the government is set to bring the budget back to surplus, something Labor has not achieved since 1989.
