Speaking to Sky News Australia, Senator Hume said the call showed the Treasurer had"discipline," and that he was heeding warnings from the opposition about the best way to fight inflation."I think he's actually listening to the messages from the Coalition that the most important thing he can do to bring down inflation is to rein in those spending ambitions.
"It takes an awful lot of discipline from a treasurer and indeed from a finance minister to say no to those spending ambitions." The revelation prompted immediate calls from Labor backbenchers, welfare groups and unions for the government to increase the amount of cost of living relief available to families struggling to cope with high interest rates and inflation.
He continued to hold the line on Wednesday in a press conference held after Senator Hume's remarks, with the Treasurer saying further cost of living relief was"not our focus right now," claiming the nation's finances were still under threat."We do have pressures on the budget which are intensifying rather than easing and our focus is on rolling out the substantial cost of living help that we have already announced.
