Anthony Albanese holds a 30 percentage point lead over Peter Dutton as preferred prime minister, though this has eased from a peak of 38 percentage points when Labor first won power.Support for the government softened over the last month, from 40 to 39 per cent, while the Coalition’s primary vote was steady at 30 per cent.
In comparison, 31 per cent of voters said the opposition leader’s performance was good and 46 per cent said Dutton was doing a poor job, down from 48 per cent, delivering a net rating of minus 15 percentage points. But Labor’s primary vote is still well up on the 32.6 per cent it recorded at the May 2022 election, while the Coalition’s is down on the 35.7 per cent it received at the last federal poll.Support for the minor parties is holding steady, with the Greens down 1 percentage point to 11 per cent, One Nation remaining at 6 per cent, and the independents up 1 percentage point to 9 per cent.
The government enjoys modest net leads over the opposition in policy areas seen as traditional LNP strengths, including economic management, in which it is ahead 35 per cent , compared with 31 per cent for the opposition. On immigration and refugee policy, Labor leads by 30 per cent to 26 per cent, a margin that has expanded by 4 percentage points on a month ago when the two parties were evenly matched.
