The investment veteran says the smart money should get ahead of the bigger players and buy into small caps that are cheap and primed for growth.

For almost two decades he’s run a successful high conviction fund – first at Macquarie and now at Firetrail Investments – the $7.5 billion boutique he set upNow he has a hunch that small-cap Australian equities are the most compelling they’ve been in more than a decade.

Hodgens says four of the fund’s small-cap investments have been the subject of takeover bids, including aged-care operator Estia and Silk Laser Australia. The tracking app Life360 is another favourite along with Genesis Minerals and aged-care operator Regis, which has been subbed in for private equity target Estia.

The small-cap fund and the S3 Global Opportunities fund are part of Pinnacle’s Horizon 2 investment program to deliver growth across its affiliates.
