When Joanna McNeill used to come home from work, she noted a common occurrence. “I remember tasting dust on my lips and it was all over my clothes,” the Melbourne woman tells 7Life. “But I didn’t know it was bad.” Joanna, now 36, was in her 20s and working as an administrator in a demountable building just 90 metres away from a quarry. The dust that had settled on her clothes and her lips was silica - and, after six years in her role, she was given an earth-shattering diagnosis.
A quick Google search sent Joanna into a spiral. Unknown future “If you Google it, well, nothing good comes up,” she says. Often, silicosis worsens within years, producing symptoms of shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue and coughing. It is caused by inhaling silica dust - a by-product of various stones most commonly used for household benchtops. The dust, formed when mining or cutting into the stone, causes irreversible damage to lungs.
