Japan’s trade and energy minister met three senior Labor ministers on Sunday to discuss the effect of Australia’s emissions rules on future LNG projects.

Australia and Japan have pledged to deepen co-operation on energy security and climate change during high-level talks where Labor sought to reassure Tokyo that future LNG supplies will not be threatened by its green energy policies.

“These projects are supported by a stable investment environment,” he said in a written response to questions. “At the moment, both countries are discussing a safeguard mechanism, mainly for LNG. I believe that this will also lead to a win-win relationship based on the trust between the two countries. I hope that many projects will be realised under a stable investment environment.”

Ms King said meetings included a “long discussion” around partnerships in critical minerals and rare earths. Mr Nishimura earlier on Sunday visited Trade Minister Don Farrell played down any tension in the relationship in a speech at the Australia Japan Business Co-operation Committee’s annual conference in Melbourne on Sunday. About 300 senior Japanese executives have flown to Australia for the conference this week.
