As Simone and Kenneth Ryle Thorsson wrangled their two toddlers for dinner time, the mum happened to spot a small white mushroom growing in one of her indoor plant pots. Making a mental note to remove it, Simone carried on with dinner - but forgot all about the tiny fungus. A few days later, Kenneth noticed the half-eaten mushroom clutched in the hand of 10-month-old Alfred. His heart sank, realising the mushroom could be poisonous - and he was right.
Hearing the sirens pull into the driveway, Simone carried her limp boy outside. “I was frantically trying to keep him awake, but it was hard,” Simone told a woman’s magazine in her home country Denmark. Paramedics took the toddler and Simone rode with them, as Kenneth followed in the car. Once in Emergency, the parents were told Alfred had ingested a rare poisonous mushroom they believe to be Lepiota elaiophylla.
