NRL 18th team expansion nears announcement as PNG Hunters lead ‘one-horse race’

The NRL is on the brink of announcing Papua New Guinea will join the competition in 2025, according to 7NEWS Sydney’s Michelle Bishop. Expansion to an even 18 teams has been on the cards ever since the Dolphins got the green light to become the 17th outfit. Now, after the Redcliffe side completed their first season this year, it looks to be a matter of time before a PNG team is announced.

“We saw those amazing scenes when the Prime Minister’s team went over there, our Aussie players were absolutely mobbed,” Bishop said. “It is like a religion. “I’m happy to put it out there, I don’t think it’s too far off being announced or made official.” ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys has previously declared PNG is at the ‘top of the list’ for expansion.
