Italy is preparing to sign a series of memoranda of understanding on infrastructure investments with China when President Xi Jinping visits Italy later this month.

The United States, which fears China could gain international clout in strategic areas such as telecommunications, has raised concerns about allies’ participation in the Belt and Road scheme. Foreign Affairs Minister Enzo Moavero said on March 14 Italy was considering strengthening so-called ‘golden powers’ to safeguard strategic assets from foreign ownership.
