Unions react to potential job losses at Standard Bank

JOHANNESBURG – Labour unions have reacted to news that Standard Bank plans to close down 91 branches across the country, which may result in 1 200 people losing their jobs.

“What is happening in the bank right now is of serious concern given our country’s high unemployment rate. Any job losses based on operational requirements will inadvertently suppress the sustainability and growth of our economy and this we cannot afford,” says Ebersohn. Standard Bank says the shift in customer behaviour means that its clients are using its branches less.

I have not been to a bank for over 2 years.

Employing somebody in this country is like marrying them. You struggle to get rid of useless people. Eventually you end up just paying retrenchment and doing with fewer people.

Nothing they can do. Thank you mylootinganc

These are the real victims of the forth industrial revolution. Most of what we once needed to do at the bank can be done with a simple unsophisticated app. Convenience for me and job less for someone else.

Unions need to be abolished. They're another factor killing the country.

They have been reacting what do they do ultimately? Nothing story ends up in the air..

Its UNIONS fault that Big Businesses are whitling their labour force... Too many strikes when it is not needed.
