The reputation of Nottingham's nightlife has been described as "better than it ever was" despite operators battling challenges such as rising energy costs. A scheme which focuses on creating a safe night out in Nottingham has just received national recognition and one of those behind it says incidents reported to the police are down.
"There's definitely been a focus on that over the last two or three years now and I think you can definitely see that in the night-time economy. The feedback that we get from the police is that reported incidents are down, that people are enjoying the night-time economy more safely."There is definitely a change in people's perception of the duty of care.
But it is the cost of living crisis where Michele says more focus needs to be placed in terms of supporting the night-time economy. A recent report from the Night Time Industries Association called for measures including a reduction in VAT, reducing the cost of the licensing appeals process and creating a national fund for the protection of cultural venues.
"You only have to walk around Nottingham on a Monday or Tuesday and half the restaurants are closed because that's how they're trying to manage their outgoings and make a profit. It is a struggle out there and I think there needs to be more done to support the night-time economy because once it's gone, it's very difficult to get back.
