Wirral Council has received the keys to the Mallory and Irvine buildings in Birkenhead, where it plans to move its offices. The construction of the buildings was funded by a £75m investment from Canada Life Asset Management and delivered by the Wirral Growth Company and Morgan Sindall Construction. The council aims to have council employees in the Mallory building by spring 2024.

Wirral Council will invest more than £9m moving its offices into one of two new buildings in Birkenhead.

Building work was forward funded by a £75m investment by Canada Life Asset Management and delivered by the Wirral Growth Company , the council’s joint company with Muse Developments, and Morgan Sindall Construction. This money will be spent on creating up to 1,000 workstations as well as installing storage and welfare facilities, internal walls, CCTV, flooring, heating, plumbing and electrics.

This is because the council will no longer be using the Cheshire Lines Building on Canning Street from April 2024 though it will look to enter a new lease for the basement space currently occupied by the archive service. However if it is unable to find an occupier, council accounts show it could face a liability of £873k a year for 35 years for the second building and this will increase. After 35 years, the council can purchase both of the sites for £1.
