Mozambique plans to stop supplying hydropower to Eskom, which poses risks for South Africa's economy and the viability of Africa's second biggest aluminium smelter.

Mozambique plans to end its hydropower supply to Eskom, which raises risks for South Africa's economy and threatens the viability of Africa's second biggest aluminium smelter. The country's energy transition strategy aims to secure the 1.15GW of power from its Cahora Bassa plant for its own use. The government stated that repatriating electricity from Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa, currently exported to South Africa, is the main short-term hydro priority.

This decision poses challenges for South Africa's power cuts and for South32, the operator of the Mozal aluminium smelter
