A surfer has died after he was pulled unconscious from the water at a popular Byron Bay beach. Emergency services were called to Main Beach at Byron Bay about 9.30am on Monday after reports a surfer was unconscious.

The 59-year-old man was pulled from the water and tended to by Surf Life Savers and NSW Ambulance paramedics. He was taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a critical condition. He died shortly after in hospital. Main Beach is the town’s most popular beach, and a well known tourist destination.
