St Kilda champion Jack Steven has made a rare public appearance ahead of the Saints’ clash against Collingwood on Thursday night. Steven was at the MCG, along with representatives from all 18 AFL cubs, to help draw attention to mental health ahead of the fourth edition of Spud’s Game. The Spud’s Game ambassadors as well as St Kilda and Collingwood players and coaches all linked arms in a big circle while musician Pete Murray sung his hit song Better Days in the traditional pre-match moment.
Before even playing a game for the Cats, Steven made headlines when he ended up in hospital with a non-life threatening stab wound to the chest. He only managed nine games at Geelong before retiring at the end of 2020 with a year still to run on his contract. Since retiring, Steven returned to play for his home club Lorne in 2021, but he has largely stayed out of the public eye.
