Melbourne defender Steven May has been taken to hospital after a brutal hit in the Demons’ 55-point win over Hawthorn on Saturday. May was crunched in a marking contest by Mabior Chol in the closing stages of the first half.

Steven May taken to hospital after scary hit. The two-time All-Australian was left in a bad way after copping the full brunt of Chol’s knee to his ribs. He was taken to the bench where he struggled to catch his breath before being subbed out and taken to hospital with suspected broken ribs. The Demons were dealt another big blow with fellow defender Jake Lever also failing to finish the match. Lever took no further part after suffering a knee injury.
