Three people have died after a fishing boat capsized on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. The boat, with five passengers, set off from Billy Lights Point boat ramp near Port Lincoln at 1pm on Monday. A frantic search started on Monday evening after family members raised the alarm when the group failed to return. A police rescue helicopter found the upturned boat near Spilsby Island in the Spencer Gulf on Tuesday morning and winched a man, 44, and a boy, 13, to safety.
Police said the bodies of two other people were found in the same area on Tuesday morning. A third body was found on Tuesday afternoon. 7NEWS understands four of the five people on board the boat were family members. South Australian Police said the boat was hit by a large wave at about 4pm, 45km from Port Lincoln, but authorities did not receive a distress call. The man and boy managed to swim to a reef before they were rescued and treated for minor injuries.
