AFL legend’s big concern with ‘dark cloud’ lingering over every player

The AFL’s drug-testing bombshell has created a ‘dark cloud’ that could lead to more injuries, according to Trent Cotchin, who worries widespread accusations kicks off a new challenge for star players. Footballers, clubs and the AFL are in the firing line after it was confirmed the league’s illicit drug policy takes a welfare approach with secretive off-the-books tests and fake injuries to avoid match-day anti-doping tests.

Footy greats discuss drug-testing bombshell. The claims were first aired in parliament by Federal MP Andrew Wilkie, but in response AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon “unapologetic” about doctors taking “the correct steps” to protect players. Under the system, coaches have been kept in the dark by club medical staff if a player self-reports drug use to the club doctor and returns a positive urine test.
