Mothers who planned on returning to work full-time said they were 'banking' on 30 hours of free childcarethey are “banking” on having 30 hours of free childcare, which will be offered to eligible parents by September 2025.

Currently, working parents of children aged three and four are entitled to 30 hours of childcare a week, but from April, working parents of two-year-olds can also accesswhether it is planning to go back to the drawing board on the Tory plan, shadow Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said the system “does require reform”.She said that the childcare sector would “really struggle” to fulfil the free hours pledge and that the Tories risk “crashing the childcare system”.

“We can’t carry on with these outgoings and childcare is one of our biggest expenses after a mortgage,” she said. “With a second child, we can’t actually keep going like this.”Agnes Arnold-Forster, mother to 10-month-old baby Nye, said she was “banking on” free childcare being extended to return to work full-time in the autumn but would have to work part-time if the free hours are not available to her.

“It’s so frustrating as someone who is a Labour voter… state-funded childcare is the sort of thing you would hope and assume they would back.”
