The number of active shortages of generic drugs in the US has reached its highest level since 2001, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. This calls for increased efforts from Congress and federal agencies to address the broken market. Proposed measures include rewarding hospitals for maintaining an adequate supply of key drugs and establishing buffer stocks of essential medicines for small hospitals.

Drugmakers that can demonstrate safer, higher-quality manufacturing practices should earn a higher price, he said.
